12 Cluster Analysis

The classification of Section 7 assigned observations to groups that were known in advance. Cluster analysis asks whether groups exist at all, and if so what they are. The distinction is the difference between supervised and unsupervised learning, and it is fundamental: there is no correct answer against which a clustering can be checked, and no significance test for its result.
