3.1 Introduction

The study of random variables and their probability distributions so far has been restricted to one-dimensional sample spaces. There are many situations where we may want to describe several random variables. For example we might measure amount of precipitate \(X\) and the volume \(Y\) of a gas released from a controlled chemical giving rise to two-dimensional space. At this level of the course we will concentrate on two variables.
