This chapter surveys the ideas the rest of the course depends on. One point should be settled before anything else, because the name misleads almost everybody who meets it first:
Note 1.1. It is the method that is non-parametric, not the data. Nothing about a data set makes it non-parametric; what is non-parametric is a procedure that does not require the population to belong to a specified family of distributions.
